THE POOR IN STA ANA , CAGAYAN

Medical Outreach for the Underprivileged

Summary

The Health and Humanity Medical Mission was conducted on December 29, 2025 at Brgy San Vicente in Sta Ana, a coastal municipality in the Cagayan province, a whole day activity to address the lack of access to healthcare among the indigent residents. A team of 20 medical professionals and volunteers provided free general check-ups, diagnostic tests, medications, and health education to more than 250 beneficiaries. The medical experts identified and addressed common health issues in the community (including hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory infections) that had been left unmanaged due to financial and logistical barriers.

INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND

Summary

The Medical Mission brings significant positive impacts to the people of Sta Ana. Specifically,

1. Improved Access to Healthcare: They provide medical services, medications, and preventive care to areas with limited or no access to regular healthcare facilities, especially the constituents in this rural or low-income community.

2. Health Education: teaching residents about hygiene, disease prevention, maternal and child care, and managing chronic conditions, empowering them to take better care of their health in a long-term basis.

3. Early Detection and Treatment: Many serious illnesses (like diabetes, hypertension, or certain cancers) are identified and treated early, reducing complications and improving survival rates.

4. Capacity Building: the Medical team had the opportunity to train local healthcare workers in basic procedures, equipment use, and best practices, strengthening the community’s own ability to provide care after the mission ends.

5. Social and Emotional Support: This can boost community morale, showing that external groups care about their well-being, and help build trust between residents and healthcare providers.

With this medical mission, common health issues were identified and the most common conditions were hypertension, respiratory infections, and malnutrition— most of which were undiagnosed or poorly managed. Majority of the beneficiaries reported they would not have sought care because of the difficulty to have a ready access to basic medical service. Further, a limited knowledge on health care is the cause of poor management of their conditions and on how to prevent illness.

Thus, there must be a continuity of this endeavor to ensure ongoing care for the recipients.

  • Establish a referral system with local hospitals for follow-up treatment of severe conditions
  • Increase supply of specialized medications through additional community partnerships
  • Provide ongoing health education through local barangay sessions Addressing prevention, education, public health, and social determinants of health alongside clinical care.

The medical mission successfully delivered much-needed healthcare to indigent community members who lack access to regular services. The high turnout and positive outcomes demonstrate the critical need for such outreach efforts. With continued support and regular implementation, we can significantly improve the health and well-being of underserved populations in Brgy San Vicente, Sta Ana, Cagayan.
